DRIFTWOOD PROJECT. 2018 onwards

Chancing spaces, driftwood, chairs, video, performance poetry.

In the driftwood project I build from abandoned and broken wood. The base elements are driftwood and two chairs patinated by air, time and water. I piece together  a conversational situation. Driftwood Installations are site –specific and they are meant to last for a little while. I don't use any fasteners but search the balance and steadiness when assembling.

In spring 2018 I installed driftwoods in demolition house exhibition at Art Centre Krimi. During the exhibition I made a performance titled  A Stitch of Light which was filmed by Tuukka Teponoja. Later I used the film material for a video work The Sun.

With Nikolai we drive by the waterside of Lake Saimaa. We collect heavy pieces of wet wood from the water. I find two abandoned, wooden chairs. I carry the pieces of wood to a warm cellar and let them dry. When they are dry and light, I let them drift ones more. A piece of board drifts above and over the chairs, like water and waves. They gather to be a mass of wood. The chairs get a character of a person swimming, drowning, steady.
